Patagonian Horseback Riding — Estancia Laguna Sofía, Puerto Natales 1 Hour · 3 Hours · 6 Hours
Saddle up and discover the raw beauty of Chilean Patagonia at the rhythm of a horse. Departing from Estancia Laguna Sofía, a working ranch located outside Puerto Natales, near Torres del Paine National Park, this guided horseback riding experience takes you through ancient native lenga beech forests, mountain ridgelines, and dramatic southern skies, with the chance to spot the majestic Andean condor along the way.
The activity is led by Patagonian baqueanos: seasoned local guides with deep knowledge of the land and horsemanship, each carrying a radio communication device and a first aid kit on every ride. All equipment, equestrian helmets, leather gaiters, and high-quality saddles with artisanal wool cushions and a leather saddlebag is provided and sanitized for every participant.
The experience is offered in three durations:
1-Hour Ride — Mirador Laguna Sofía: An accessible introduction to Patagonian horseback riding. Covering approximately 5 km across terrain ranging from 59 to 381 metres in altitude, this ride is ideal for families, older adults, and first-time riders. Available morning and afternoon. Difficulty: Low · Ages 4–80 · All riding levels · Effective riding time: ~1 hour
3-Hour Ride — Laguna Sofía, Cuevas & Sierra Señoret: The most popular option. Covering approximately 8 km through mountain landscapes, native forest, and open Patagonian terrain, this ride rewards with sweeping views and genuine backcountry immersion. Available morning and afternoon. Difficulty: Low–Medium · Ages 4–80 · All riding levels · Effective riding time: ~2:30 hours
6-Hour Ride — Mirador Cóndor & Centenary Forest Trail: The full expedition. Covering approximately 14 km with ascent to the Mirador Cóndor at 533 metres above sea level, you'll be rewarded with one of the most spectacular panoramas in the region: Puerto Natales, Fiordo Última Esperanza, Sierra Dorotea, Laguna Sofía, Cordillera Prat, and a thriving condor colony overhead. A box lunch and rest stop are included. Morning departures only. Intermediate to advanced riders. Difficulty: Medium–High · Ages 10–70 · Intermediate–Advanced · Effective riding time: ~4:30 hours
Patagonian weather is extreme and unpredictable; sun, wind, cold, rain, or snow can occur in a single day. The activity is only cancelled if heavy rain compromises participant safety.
